Graham Thorpe: 1969-2024
Thorpe made his first-class debut for Surrey in the summer of 1988 before establishing himself as a regular in the 1989 season.
He finally made his England debut at the age of 24, scoring 114 on debut against Australia at Trent Bridge in 1993.
Thorpe established himself as a key player in the middle-order, with his unbeaten double century against New Zealand in Christchurch in 2002 standing out as a career highlight—his innings included 28 fours and four sixes.
Thorpe’s appearances for England became sporadic until he retired internationally in 2005. He then started a coaching career in Australia, mentoring players such as Steve Smith and David Warner at New South Wales, before taking up a role as a batting coach with the England and Wales Cricket Board.
He was appointed Afghanistan head coach in March 2022 following his departure from the England set-up, but did not take up the role due to ill health.
