The golf competition has been fiercely competitive through the first 18 holes at the Paris Olympics, and it’s expected to be just as intense over the ensuing 54 holes. For those in the United States wanting to catch the live action, an early start is required. The excitement resumes on Friday at 3 a.m. ET with the second round beginning at Le Golf National in Guyancourt, France.

Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama holds the 18-hole lead ahead of the United States’ Xander Schaufele, but they have a big-time group including the United States’ Scottie Scheffler, Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and Sweden’s Ludvig Åberg breathing down their necks.

With only 60 golfers in the field, each round will go by rather quickly. Tee times are compressed — especially compared to The Open Championship two weeks ago — and there are some great groups to follow throughout the competition. Great Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood is playing alongside Matsuyama, while Spain’s Jon Rahm and Norway’s Viktor Hovland will be pushing Schaufele over the second set of 18 holes.

If you’re wondering how meaningful this event is going to be for Frenchmen Victor Perez and Matthew Pavon, both competing in their home country, Pavon addressed that earlier in the week: “After a few days on the Olympic village, the opening ceremony in Paris with all this crowd in front of the Eiffel Tower and all the great moments we spent the last few days, it really feels like a gold medal would be now ranked higher than a major for me.
